What is Search Intent and Why It Matters in SEO

Update: January 06, 2026 6 comments

Search Intent is a very strong link between User Queries Search Engines and Blog/Website Publishers. Previously, Google used to rank based on keywords.

But as competition increased, Google developed algorithms to further improve its quality services. It understands user needs and displays results based on what the user is actually searching for.

For example, if a user searches for “Bank Exam,” Google will understand that the user is an aspirant seeking banking exams and will show them websites that provide details of upcoming bank and government exams.

Blogging, SEO, Content Writing, PPC, or any of your online businesses, their success depends on satisfying the User Search Intent. If you also want to be successful in the online world, then you will also have to understand about Search Intent.

What is Search Intent?

Search Intent is also called User Intent and Audience Intent, which means the user’s intention as to what they want to find in the search engine using specific keywords.

Search engines like Google’s algorithm today is so sharp and accurate that it understands what the user wants to know from the keywords searched by the user.

And from the website content available on the internet, it brings up the website/blog which provides the correct information for the user.

Many bloggers and SEO experts get their articles ranked in Google SERP by misusing the Google algorithm, but if those articles do not satisfy the search intent of the users, then the ranking automatically goes down after some time.

Before understanding search intent, you need to understand keywords, what keywords are, and how search engines work. If you’re clear on these two topics, you’ll easily understand Search Intent.

In simple terms, to improve the user experience, Google wants to show users only what they’re searching for.

Therefore, if your website has conducted keyword research and blog writing based on user search intent, you can quickly rise to the top of the Google SERP.

Types of Search Intent?

How many types of search intent are there? This means what kind of information people want to know from which keywords. Let’s find out:

Informational Intent

Informational intent means that the user wants to get information about something on the search engine, whether it’s about a course, food recipes, or information about an object, person, or place.

Google understands informational intent very well and shows you the results you’re looking for.

Let’s understand with the help of another example: if you write “meaning” after any word, Google will show you only the meaning of that word, not the long articles written on that keyword, because Google understands that the user’s intent here is only to know the meaning of that word. Similarly, if you write the full form, you will see the full form of that word at the top.

So now you must have understood what Informational Intent is and how you should write articles on Informational keywords.

Navigational Intent

Navigational Intent is an intent in which the user is searching for a specific website, such as Facebook. If you type “Facebook” on Google, you will go to Facebook’s official website.

And if you search for “Google Question Hub” on Google, you will go to “Google Question Hub.” This is because Google knows very well what the majority of users want to search for with that keyword.

So, if you’re seeing high volume and CPC for a keyword you’ve searched for, check to see if it’s a navigational intent keyword.

Because if you write an article using a navigational keyword, even if it ranks, you won’t get traffic.

Transactional Intent

As the name suggests, transactional intent refers to a buying and selling keyword, which indicates whether the user is in the mood for purchasing or selling.

For such keywords, Google only looks for websites that provide information about those products and services. For example, if someone searches for “best mobile under 10,000,” it will show the user a mobile sales website, not information about mobile parts.

Commercial Intent

Commercial Intent is a bit of a hybrid of transactional intent and informational intent, meaning users search for what they want to buy, but in the future, they first want information about it, such as reviews, the best holiday plan, the best SEO plugin, etc.

How to Understand Search Intent?

To understand Search Intent, first decide on the topic you want to write about, then conduct keyword research.

Keyword research will also give you a good idea of user search intent, but you should also search that keyword on Google and see what pattern the top ranked websites and blogs use to write their articles and how they are satisfying the user’s search intent.

Conclusion

Today we learned what Search Intent is and how many types of Search Intent there are. If you publish articles based on your user’s search intent, your user experience will be excellent and this will also boost your SEO.

Google SERP has over 1000 ranking factors, and the most important of these is your good user experience, because Google is a search engine whose primary job is to provide satisfied and quality services to its users.
